I've been away from my friends, my blog, and myspace...but for a good reason. I got a new job!! Coordinating events for a pretty cool publishing company, powerHouse Books. I miss my friends at Cornerstone and I miss having a laptop to dj with, haha. Ultimately, when I get myself situated at the new job I won't be staying at work til 10pm every night:/ Ya, I've been going into work at 9:30am and getting home around 10:25pm...
Anyway, come out and party with me this Saturday night at Nacotheque and help me remember what it's like to have fun!

Live - Los Super Elegantes @ Starbucks Salon | NYC

On Sunday, September 10th a unique punk-mariachi-hip-pop group from Los Angeles (via Tijuana and Buenos Aires), Los Super Elegantes, performed in NYC. They were the exclusive act for the evening at the Starbucks Salon (other performers include Jose Gonzalez & Lansing Dreiden). The Salon was set in Soho on Greene Street in a rented out store front with Starbucks colors painted in swirl designs all over the walls. A coffee kiosk sold cups of hot coffee in ceramic mugs while Starbucks baristas passed out shots of new coffee samples.

I had never seen Los Super Elegantes live and I was excited to see a full house from the beginning to end of their set. Milena Muzquiz was wearing a short, black, baby doll dress and a black crop sweater. Martiniano Lopez-Crozet dressed in all black with a Torero-like look (bullfighter) from the waist down with knee high socks and tight black pants.

Their live performance was amusing and expectedly, very kitch... perfect for a Sunday evening show with comfy benches and coffee. But don't think they didn't pop the roof off just because people were sitting down! The band bopped along gleefully with Kenny on bass, Dave on drums, Ben on guitar and Mike on trumpet. People bounced up and down in their seats and others were dancing in the isles while singing along to every song. They performed all my favorites, "Je Suis Bien," "Por Que Te Vas," "Dance" (ESG cover), and "Sixteen."

Favorites of David Byrne and featured in Index and The FADER, Los Super Elegantes have played with Beck and recently performed in Mexico with underground electropop/cumbia artist, Maria Daniela y su Sonido Lasser (performing in NYC Oct. 7th), are working on a new album to be released in 2007. Their album, Channelizing Paradise, is available to purchase at Amoeba Records in Hollywood, Sea Level Records in Echo Park and online through iTunes, Napster, and Aquarius Records.

DOLLS IN DEUTSCHLAND - Sixties girl-pop in Germany

My darling friend, Sheila B. from Cha Cha Charming recently sent me an email with the latest scoop on girl-pop. She included an article about dozens of girls who made it big in '60s Germany and I thought it was only fitting to share it with you all.

xo Amylu
--------------

Dolls In Deutschland

Sixties girl-pop in Germany

In the early '60s, Germany was still trying to come to terms with its past. The division of the country into capitalist West and communist East cut deep into the national psyche, and musically, Germany was no less torn. The almighty European beat boom turned German teens off their country's pop fluff, thus setting the battleground for foreign versus domestic. But German record companies refused to hear the call for something more hip, and continued to force-feed schmaltzy, high camp fare to their artists. Girl singers, traditionally consigned to a diet of stolen kisses, salty tears, and song contests, found it particularly difficult to pass through the German music industry's Checkpoint Charlie. Very few were granted access to the catalogue of cool. For the majority, Schlager (hits)—the kind of low-grade pop lite that gave German music a bad name—was their domain, whether they liked it or not.

But Deutschmark-filled pockets eventually changed hard German minds. When a post-war economic miracle gave Germans greater spending power over their neighbors, international travel became de rigueur for the country's newly wealthy residents, and international influence on Germany's pop culture was inevitable. Themes of love and adventure in foreign climes dominated German lyrics, demonstrating the strength of Germans' musical wanderlust. For a country low on national pride, foreign was fab. Nublu: Brooklyn
Sunday, September 3rd on the Gowanus Canal

with Kudu, Love Trio, Forro in the Dark, I Led 3 Lives, Karina, and the
Nublu Orchestra conducted by Butch Morris

and DJs Probus, Justin Carter, Hardedge and In Flagranti

Nublu transports the larger part of its Avenue C family to Brooklyn for an outdoor Labor Day party right on the Gowanus Canal. Kudu blows up the stage with their big bass. Love Trio – featuring Jesse Murphy from Brazilian Girls, Ilhan Ersahin from Wax Poetic and Kenny Wollesen – powers through driving dance-jazz. Forro in the Dark, whose November album will feature David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, and Miho Hatori, bounces everyone into the water with their modern Brazilian dance music. I Led 3 Lives, featuring legendary bass player Juini Booth, obscures everyone with mysterious meanderings; Karina, vocalist for Thievery Corporation, turns the whole thing into a Brazilian playground; and Butch Morris leads the Nublu Orchestra in a jaw-dropping session of conducted experimentation. DJs Probus, Justin Carter, Hardedge, and In Flagranti drop sounds both hard and soft before after and in between bands.

It’s going to be a very nice day.

From the Brooklyn Battery (toll) Tunnel, use a right-hand toll lane and take the next to the right lane after the tolls and take the "Exit Only" lane for Exit 26, Hamilton Avenue. Stay/bear left down the exit ramp and go left under the highway (Stay to the right of the suppers that divide the road!) where you will be facing/about to cross Hamilton Avenue. Clinton Street is diagonally to your left, between Hamilton on the hard left and Huntington to the right. Go into Clinton street and continue on Clinton through 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st Places to Carroll Street. Parking is not a problem.

From the Brooklyn, Williamsburg or Manhattan Bridges, Queens, or Long Island, head S/W on the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway (BQE/278), towards the Verrazano Bridge. Stay in the center lane until Exit 26 to avoid getting caught up in the left and right exits-only. It is then the
exact same exit and procedure as above because the BQE merges with the tunnel exit and the Gowanus Expressway just before that point.

E-motion Italian Graphics

A pretty Chicago gal named Lilly who subscribes to my blog, posted something on myspace that caught my eye. One, her subject line was "E-motion Italian Graphics" and seeing as my blog is about foreign languages and media revolving around it I clicked it. Then, she wrote "Italian-style. I don't speak the language, but it sounds really cool." and this ladies and gents is exactly what I hope to portray in my blog! That maybe most of you who read this don't speak any other language besides English but that you can still find the foreign language appealing and still be attracted to the artwork at hand.

The video of Italian Graphics she's referring to looks like a TV commercial from Italy.
Watch it and enjoy!

MUSIC OF ANOTHER COLOR...
Mash-up djs are becoming all the rage to me in my amyluinluv book. First it was Bootie SF with the lovely dj duo, Adrian and the Mysterious D (the creators and masterminds behind Bootie), at a 2006 New Years party in San Fran. My boyfriend and I walked into a small room off the main ballroom to find oddly familiar but not sure kinda mix-up of music going on. We noticed the walls were covered in photocopies of half faces fused together like Eminem with Morrissey and Sid Vicious with Madonna. They now produce Bootie parties in San Fran, LA, and they will be producing a special Burning Man party in Black Rock City on Friday Sept. 1st. I fell in love with their creations and am now determined to make sure NYC gets a taste of the Bootie Mash-up duo and then a hunger for more!

Bootie Links:

Since then, A Plus D introduced me to another Mash-up dj from France, DJ Zebra. Zebra is also a musician and producer. He hosts the "Zebramix", a daily radio show on Oüi Fm. On Friday, Sept 8th he'll be spinning at Bootie SF at DNA Lounge. His most famous tracks : Soul desir" (Aretha Franklin vs. Noir desir), "Killing boombastic" (Shaggy / R.A.T.M.), "Are you gonna be my motherfucker?" (Prince / Jet) ou "Take me out saturday night" (Franz Ferdinand / Neimo). DJ Zebra released the "Dance to the underground" mix (on Labels / EMI, 2004) and did official remixs for -M-, Arno, Tetes Raides, Hoggboy, Neimo, La Phaze, Extra extra et Elevate Newton's Theory.

Kinky, Una Linea de Luz Audio
(Review from FILTER magazine)

Mexican dancehall all-stars, Kinky are returning this fall with their third studio album, Reina, to be released September 5 on Nettwerk Records. Reina ("Queen") was recorded in Southern California where the band expected relaxation and sunshine but instead got floods and mudslides invading their studio. Ever the thrifty ones, the band fixed up their debris-laden instruments using duct tape, scraps of metal and even tree branches. The resulting album is an understandably eclectic bunch of tracks mixing rock, electronica, hip-hop, Latin rhythm and even the sounds of pots and pans.

Stream one of our favorite tracks from the album, Una Linea de Luz ("A Line of Light"), below and enter to win a copy of Reina here.

YELLE - ELECTRO POP FROM FRANCE!

I know, I know, NYC is tired of electropop but everywhere else in the world is still luvin' it and so am I! Today, I came upon a band from France called YELLE who are on Source etc. (EMI Records). This group consists of two people, the lovely Yelle, vocals and the GrandMarnier, production. Seems like that's the new fad these days for bands, having two or three members (i'm sure it's a lot less expensive to travel too, haha). Personally, I'm partial to female vocals and so, I am luving Yelle's voice on this bubble gum, electropop record!

Their debut EP, Je Veux Te Voir, comes out on august 28th (apparently it was supposed to come out a week earlier but the label had to push the date back). I have only heard the three songs on their myspace page and my favorite songs in order are "Je Veux Te Voir" and "Ce Jeu". Unfortunately, I only can read spanish so I have no idea what those song name are when they translate into English but AltaVista's Babel Fish Translation program says: "Please See" and "This Play". Hopefully, I'll get my hands on the full album soon and report back when I do;) For now, take a listen to their three songs on their myspace page and let me know what you think!!

Nancy's Rubias has a new song!

Remember that New York Dolls look-a-like band, Nancy's Rubias from Spain? I wrote about them back in April '06, read my review here.

Ya, well, they have a new song called "Barbie Debe Morir" (Barbie Must Die) and it's available for download on their myspace page! So go check it out and download it si le gusta:) I love the scratchy guitar riffs and the marching-like drums beats. This song has a bit of a commerical feel to it. I could totally see this on MTV, haha! Not a bad thing, that's great for Nancy's Rubias! I was waiting for them to come out with a new song for a while now;) Now, I just gotta get my ass back to Spain to see them live!

The first time I had a bottle of Jarritos was with my papi at a park in Mexico when I was 4 years old. My dad worked as a manager in the Mexico offices and had a large supply at his house all the time! Who cares about Fonta?! Now it's Jarritos time to shine! Personally, I prefer Jarritos soda over Fonta any day (more flavors to choose from). "MEJOR JARRITOS!"

To shine w/ all it's glory, Jarritos has a new promo vehicle ready to rocanrol on the streets of East LA! Hay dios, look at the size of that thing! Super chido:)

If you aren't familiar with Jarritos yet then read on and edjumacate yourself about one of the leading Mexican soft drink brands in the U.S.

Jarritos
jarritos official website

Started in 1950, Jarritos is the first national soft drink brand in Mexico. It is the leading brand in the mexican soft drink category in the U.S and a mexican cultural icon. Jarritos is available in eleven delicious fruit flavors: Tamarind, Mandarin, Fruit Punch, Jamaica, Lime, Grapefruit, Guava, Pineapple, Strawberry, Mango and Watermelon.

Jarritos History
Over 50 years ago, Don Francisco “El Güero” Hill had the vision to create a line of soft drinks made from natural fruit extracts that would reflect the flavors and popular taste of the Mexican people. He worked on the development of flavors for his soft drink product that would later be known as Jarritos. The brand name finds its origin in the Mexican tradition of drinking coffee, water and other drinks in clay pottery jugs, called “jarritos”, because it keeps beverages fresher and cooler.
The Jarritos Chronology

A Leader is Born
1950 With a unique bottle design of 400ml, when in Mexico the industry standard was 350ml, Jarritos launches its Coffee flavor in Mexico City , becoming the first national brand of Mexican soft drinks in the country.

1951 The following year, “El Güero” Hill develops a process that allows tamarind juice extract to be suitable for a soft drink, resulting in the first tamarind flavored soft drink in Mexico and enjoying of great market acceptance.

1951 Throughout the same year develops Mandarin, Lemon and Fruit Punch flavors, gaining a bigger market share.

1954 In less than five years after its conception, Jarritos is the best-selling Mexican soft drink and enjoys trade

1955 distribution in central Mexico second only to Coca-Cola.

1960 Jarritos is distributed and/or bottled in 80 percent of the states of Mexico.

True Fruit Makes the Difference
1960
As the brand keeps expanding throughout the Mexican republic, it begins acquiring new tastes and flavors according to the regional traditions for Mexican food. Grapefruit, for instance, is made from fresh grapefruits from the state of Veracruz , Jamaica uses extracts from Jamaica flowers of Guerrero and Oaxaca , Lemon is made with lemons from the region of Colima , the same with Pineapple, which is made from the fruits of the state of Tabasco . To this date, each region awaits the harvest season to provide Jarritos with the best fruit year after year.

Crossing the border
1982 With the emigration of Mexicans to the US , the demand of Mexican products in this country became imminent. Truckloads of Mexican products were crossing the borders everyday and Jarritos was almost in all these loads.

Jarritos gets its passport
1988 The Hill family from Mexico City , and the Fernandez family from Ciudad Juarez , saw this need and formed a strategic alliance to begin the exportation of Jarritos to the US.

1997 Jarritos is available in all major Hispanic markets across the U.S. becoming the leading Mexican soft drink brand in the U.S.
